Concept idea for a new species thing, not too original, I know was fun to do though.

--Quillback Hyriads--

Hyriad: Of the reptilian family, creatures with talloned digits, and an opposable thumb. The body structure of Hyriads resembles that of Dragons, with elongated necks, snake-like crania, and long spindly tails. Structures vary slightly according to habitat, looking either more feline, or more like ostritches.

Also known as the 'Swamp Dragon' due to the fact that this creature favours swampland habitats. Although there is no proven link of kin to the greater dragons.
Small in scale, usually about 40-50cm at the shoulders, they prey on small mammals such as marsh hares, fish, swamp birds and amphibians. The long quills ornating its back are a sign of maturity, as well as secrete toxins to stun potential attackers.
The small set of wings is usually the reason why they are thought of as dragons, however these creatures do not fly. The wings are usually used by males to show off to females, and are generally tucked tightly against the back. They also offer the quillback propulsion when in or under water.

Quillbacks are far from being dull witted, as is generally beleived. The creatures, although small in size, are quite intelligent, and communicate with a complex set of clicks, whistles and chirps.

Having been hunted for its mane of quills, the species is in decline in the Wilds, and can only be sighted in the deepest reaches of the swamplands of the Western continent.
